Project Details
After 36 years in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood, the iconic Elliott Bay Book Company was looking for a new home with better access to parking, population, daytime and nighttime vitality, safety and increased foot traffic. The Ford Building, formerly an auto repair shop built in the 1920s, and located in the heart of the Pike/Pine triangle of Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood provided the perfect venue for the relocation of this beloved bookstore. The aesthetic character of the aging Ford warehouse fit perfectly with the bookstore’s identity and Studio Meng Strazzara worked to maintain the character of the building, while the design team increased energy performance and coordinated seismic upgrades to the building’s shell and core.
The refurbished warehouse, allowed Elliott Bay Books to retain the character and flavor of its original location, providing the owners an opportunity to increase sales in a new more vibrant neighborhood, while maintaining their loyal customers and unique identity.
