Project Details

The Secondary Academy for Success serves its community as a choice school for grades 9-12. Studio Meng Strazzara’s design rearticulates a former warehouse into a sleek, vibrant, functional learning environment for students whose learning style doesn’t quite fit with traditional programs. The spacious warehouse interior boasts 27-foot ceilings and encapsulates a sleek collection of educational spaces circulating a common gathering area—creating a central “heart” to the school that visually connects learning spaces and bolsters a communal experience.

The resulting high school has made close ties to the surrounding business community, providing students real-world experience through internships and projects. In addition to the adaptive reuse of the building, sustainable features include daylighting, high-recycled-content materials, occupancy sensors, skylights, over insulated walls and roof, solar shades, and high-performance glazing. There is an array of solar panels and a wind powered generator added to enhance the new STEM program. One of the key components incorporated into the design is an Interactive Technology Dashboard system, allowing staff and students to track the building’s use of resources.

Secondary Academy for Success was a 2013 Polished Apple Award Winner.
